The Council for Christian Colleges & Universities (CCCU) seeks an individual with a strong commitment to Christian higher education to help pursue the public policy positions of the CCCU. The CCCU’s primary policy portfolio contains issues of religious freedom and institutional autonomy; higher education and student aid policy; and tax policy affecting higher education and the nonprofit sector generally. The CCCU also supports other policy positions that have broad support within the Christian or higher education communities or where the voice of Christian higher education can uniquely make a difference. Ideally, candidates will have familiarity with some of these issues, but all applicants must have a desire and willingness to learn about these and other issues that could develop. This position is available beginning February 2019.

Candidates are advised to review the CCCU’s website to learn more about the CCCU’s public policy positions. Candidates who reach the final interview stage will be expected to have a great deal of familiarity with the positions of the CCCU during the interview and be able to articulate a cogent rationale for the positions.

The CCCU is a higher education association of more than 180 Christian institutions around the world. With campuses across the globe, including more than 150 in the U.S. and Canada and nearly 30 more from an additional 18 countries, CCCU institutions are accredited, comprehensive colleges and universities whose missions are Christ-centered and rooted in the historic Christian faith. Most also have curricula rooted in the arts and sciences. Core Responsibilities:

  • Lead the execution of the government relations strategy of the CCCU
  • Maintain a portfolio of public policy issues and be responsible both for updating the Vice President for Government & External Relations on each issue and for suggesting strategic approaches to furthering the interest of CCCU institutions
  • Assist the Vice President for Government & External Relations in forming, maintaining, and furthering relationships with key constituents and coalition partners in the higher education, religious, and nonprofit communities
  • Conduct research on legal and public policy topics
  • Write supporting materials and briefs on policies and issues of import to the CCCU
  • Conduct and attend meetings with congressional offices, government agencies, key external stakeholders, and CCCU institutions to further the CCCU’s policy agenda
  • Contribute to the strategic plan for messaging and mobilizing on issues of import to the CCCU, including assisting the Director of Communications and Public Affairs on policy-related media outreach and response
  • Write regular communications for distribution to CCCU members on current public policy issues
  • Manage constituent engagement efforts such as fly-ins or the “Hill Day” during D.C.-based conferences
  • Assist the President and Vice President for Government & External Relations in preparing speeches and presentations given to member institutions and the public
  • As a data-driven organization, all staff are responsible for maintaining and updating CCCU database records so that the database records are as current and accurate as possible
  • Liaison to the Financial Aid Commission and possibly others as assigned
  • Supervise government relations fellows and interns as relevant

Persons applying for the position should:

  • Have a strong appreciation for the Christian mission and purpose of the CCCU and its BestSemester programs
  • Have exceptional verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills. This position requires a lot of writing. Speed and excellent analytical writing skills are a must.
  • Be highly organized, able to multi-task effectively, and re-prioritize as needed due to the fast-paced nature of this role.
  • Enjoy working on a broad variety of public policy topics rather than being an expert in a narrow set.
  • Have a deep familiarity with the legislative and regulatory process – ideally from having worked on Capitol Hill or in a similar advocacy role.
  • Take a problem-solving approach to public policy issues. The CCCU is not a think tank; we are actively trying to solve the legislative and regulatory issues our institutions face.

  • Ability to work for long periods of time at the computer
  • Occasional travel
  • Ability to occasionally work on the weekends or into evenings for events or when a heavy project load or urgent matter requires attention
