Little Lights Urban Ministries
Little Lights Urban Ministries provides holistic ministry and services to children and families living in poverty in Washington, D.C., primarily focusing on Potomac Gardens and Hopkins, two public housing communities on Capitol Hill, as well as on Benning Terrace public housing, east of the Anacostia River in Ward 7. Little Lights provides high-quality and intensive after-school and summer programs with academics and enrichment, one-to-one mentoring, and arts-based programs. Little Lights provides economic empowerment and family resource programs through the Family Center, on-the-job training, and the Clean Green Team, a landscaping micro-enterprise.
Prayer Requests
- Pray for the families served by the program.
- Most of their sites are located in public housing. One of the public housing sites may be redeveloped, which is leading Little Lights to consider getting space of their own. Pray for vision and provision moving forward.
Ways to Get Involved
Please contact Alizah Wilson from Little Lights if you are interested in getting involved in any of these opportunities.
Little Lights is looking for volunteers for the following opportunities:
- Homework Club – Homework Club pairs volunteer tutors with students to help build skills and understanding while completing homework assignments. Homework Club takes place Monday through Thursday in the evening.
- Mentoring – Mentor a Little Lights child. As a mentor, your goal is twofold: To love your mentee as God loves, freely and unconditionally, and to model what it means to love and follow Jesus.
- College and Career – College and Career Readiness helps students gain skills and knowledge to navigate their postsecondary endeavors through one-to-one tutoring, college planning, and job training.
- Two more men to support Boys Night – Boys Night offers middle school boys the chance to meet weekly throughout the school year with caring mentors to build a community that encourages character and spiritual growth, fun, and serving others.
- Group volunteering at Little Light’s Saturday Program– Saturday Program offers students a safe, fun place to spend their unstructured weekend hours. Twice a month from 10 am-1 pm, a volunteer group of 6-12 people play an instrumental role in providing personal attention to students, as well as organizing a craft project and supplying packed lunches for all of the students.
- Engage in Little Light’s Race Literacy program – The Race Literacy 101 class is a 12-week study and discussion group authentically learning and reflecting on race and racism in a grace-filled environment. This class is offered twice a year during the fall and spring. D.C.
