You can’t live in Washington during an election cycle without knowing someone who is stumping for a candidate (though we rarely give stump speeches standing on a literal stump anymore). When Jesus sent out his twelve apostles to stump for him, it was stumping of a different order: Announcing a King rather than pitching a candidate. And he encouraged them to know their audience, stay on message, foresee opposition and believe in their candidate. Psalm 27.4-6; Jeremiah 1.4-10; 1 Peter 2.9-10; Matthew 10.5-24
